Skills in MARDEK are actions or effects useable by playable characters both in and out of battle. Skills are usually learnt from equipment, and can be used without equipment by mastering them - skills are mastered by gaining AP. There are three kinds of skills: action skills, reaction skills (typically referred to as 'reactions'), and passive skills.

Action skills[]

Action skills are actions which can be performed by playable characters. They can be used both in and outside of battle, although certain skills can only be used in one or the other of the two instances. Most Action skills cost MP to be used.

Action skills are divided into individual skillsets, each of which can only be used by specific characters. Each time a non-mastered, character-specific action skill is used, the user gains one AP for it.

Unique action skills[]

Unique action skills are unassociated with any skillset, usually available to all playable characters, and typically usable free of charge.

Reactions[]

Reactions are actions or effects which take place because either an enemy's move, or a playable character's action skill meets certain criteria. They are executed by pressing X at the right time. Reactions must be equipped in order to be used - doing so costs RP.

Technically, most reactions can be used by all playable characters, but certain reactions are unavailable to certain characters due to equipment limitations. Each non-mastered, equipped reaction gains 1 AP every time that reaction is successfully executed.

Reactions are divided into physical and magical reactions, which are further divided into attack and defence reactions.

Passive skills[]

Passive Skills are effects which automatically take effect both inside and outside of battle. They must be equipped in order to be used - doing so costs RP.

Technically, most passive skills can be used by all playable characters, but certain passive skills are unavailable to certain characters due to equipment limitations. Playable characters gain one AP for every non-mastered passive skill they have equipped at the end of a victorious battle.
