Alorafaneaster

An aster, representing the Alora Fane universe

Alora Fane is the setting of Tobias Cornwall's newer post-Flash era games. It is also the name of his current blog. Divine Dreams, Taming Dreams, Memody: Sindrel Song, Belief, Miasmon, and Atonal Dreams are set in Alora Fane.

Previously, his games were set in the Astrostles Galaxy.

Overview[]

Alora Fane was built by the Aolmna, a hive-minded alien race which were upset with sentient races wiping themselves out in violent wars before they reached their full potential. The Aolmna were a race who valued deep empathy and connectedness, a mindset known as Unisis. They felt that they had to share this philosophy with other races to save many lives. The Aolmna discovered that the root of reality is consciousness, and learned to manipulate this consciousness to 'dream up' artificial worlds. These worlds are known as Fanes. Alora Fane is one of these Fanes, and is made up of six sub-worlds, "petals", surrounding a central "Nexus". These self-contained worlds are each home to a single sentient race, collectively known as the Barbari. The Barbari consider the Aolmna to be gods. Most the Barbari are not aware of the existence of the petals other than their native one, or believe them to be imaginary.

One of these races, the Elarna, were particularly driven by a desire for destruction, despite the teaching of the gods. This culminated in a Cataclysm, which caused the destruction of the Elarna's petal and their extinction, and severed the connection of the world to the Aolmna. The world was left godless and decaying, with the races left to fend for themselves without divine guidance.

The nature of the cataclysm caused the consciousness-sculpted substrate of the world to be torn apart. Because the Aolmna effectively "dreamed" the world into existence, this "miasma" causes the Barbaris' thoughts to become manifest as miasmon.[1][2]

Petals[]

Alora Fane consists of six petals surrounding a central Nexus.

  • The Bronze Archipelago is home to the Bold race.
  • Meekwood is home to the secretive deer-eared Meek race.
  • The Enlightened Technopolis is home to the Lucens.
  • The Crystal Mesas (Carna) is home to the Sindrels.
  • The Shadowmoors is home to the Varnyn.
  • The Fracture was home to the Elarna. The Cataclysm tore this petal into floating chunks. Miasmon are particularly prevalent in Fracture.

Trivia[]

  • The idea that monsters form from "miasma" was already found in Tobias' previous works such as the Mardek series.
