Actually, we used to have a category for each type of item in the MARDEK series (e.g. Category:MARDEK Swords), but I deleted them about a year ago. See, we didn't always have a one-to-one relationship between items and articles, like we do now. Instead, we used to lump information about every item in the series onto one of 17(?) pages, based on type. As you can probably imagine, those pages got suuuuper long, making them hard to read, edit, and link to. It got so bad that we had to split some types into multiple pages, e.g. Accessories (MARDEK) and Accessories (MARDEK)/2. After some convincing, I wound up splitting those so-called "mega lists" into individual pages, but I needed some temporary categories to help keep track of things. That was at the end of 2015, but I didn't get around to removing those crutches until about a year ago. Anyway, while I'm not entirely opposed to your proposal, there are a few problems with it IMO.
First and foremost, I'm strongly opposed to just making up names for things. I've been trying to transition the wiki away from that for years, and we're much closer to using official names everywhere now. Fortunately, each item in the MARDEK series has a type, which does roughly what you're describing. Unfortunately, the game makes no distinction between "healing" and "offensive" items—there are only expendable items.
Second of all, I'm strongly opposed to using categories like tags. The way we organize our categories right now forms a tree, and trying to change that structure is a really bad idea. For example, we could place Lapis Lily in Category:MARDEK, Category:Items, and Category:ACCESSORY, but then how would somebody get a list of items in the MARDEK' series? It's impossible! Note that I'm fine with tag-like categories for maintenance purposes, since the goal is to remove them ASAP.
Third, I'm opposed to using separate categories for articles and images. Category pages automatically create a new section for images (example), so I see no reason to create two pages for the same thing.
Finally, we currently add Category:MARDEK Items automatically, via Template:Infobox MARDEK Item. This strategy makes it waaaay easier to rename or replace categories, which is normally super annoying. I'd really like to keep doing that.
Here's a tl;dr list of constraints:
- Each type category must
-
- Use its official, in-game name.
- Be a member of exactly one category (Category:MARDEK Items).
- Contain both item pages and item images.
- Include both the article and image of its members.
- Each item article must
-
Does all of that sound reasonable to you?
